According to a recent hand washing study by Industry Experts, children as young as 3 years old can grasp the importance and the techniques of proper hand hygiene . This Elementary Grades' ( K-5 ) In-Classroom Educational / Instructional Hand Hygiene Program addresses these crucial community health issues .WHAT TYPES OF DISEASES CAN GOOD HAND WASHING PREVENT ? Diseases spread through fecal-oral transmission. Infections which may be transmitted through this route include salmonellosis, shigellosis, hepatitis A, giardiasis, enterovirus, amebiasis, and campylobacteriosis. Because these diseases are spread through the ingestion of even the tiniest particles of fecal material, hand washing after using the toilet cannot be over-emphasized. Diseases spread through indirect contact with respiratory secretions. Microorganisms which may be transmitted through this route include influenza, Streptococcus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the common cold. Because these diseases may be spread indirectly by hands contaminated by respiratory discharges of infected people, illness may be avoided by washing hands after coughing or sneezing and after shaking hands with an individual who has been coughing and sneezing. Diseases may also be spread when hands are contaminated with urine, saliva or other moist body substances. Microorganisms which may be transmitted by one or more of these body substances include cytomegalovirus, typhoid, staphylococcal organisms, and Epstein-barr virus. These germs may be transmitted from person to person or indirectly by contamination of food or inanimate objects such as toys. INTRODUCTION : The basis for this Hand Hygiene Program was derived from a Pilot Program in 2007 which involved three classrooms of first graders, third graders, and fifth graders from New York State Public Schools to evaluate the benefits of this " In-classroom" Hand Hygiene Program . The following criteria were chosen to establish a beneficial program : THE FINAL EVALUATION OF THE PILOT EFFORT AFFIRMED THESE ASSUMPTIONS ! WHY IN THE CLASSROOM ? HOW DO CHILDREN LEARN ?? : BY EXAMPLE ! A recent Handwashing Observational and Telephone Survey reported that people do not wash their hands as often as they state.  A TELEPHONE SURVEY found that 92% of respondents ( 1004 adults ) claimed they ALWAYS wash up after using the restroom. A corresponding OBSERVATIONAL SURVEY viewed 6333 adults in Public Restrooms in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans and San Francisco ( 3236 males and 3097 females ) and found that ONLY 67%, IN FACT, Did So. Hand washing is one of the simplest and easiest way to reduce the spread of some diseases. Children who washed their hands four times per day have less sick days. Small children learn best through repetition and reinforcement. First lessons can be followed up with story books about germs and hand washing; by looking at pictures of germs; by making pictures or posters ( collages are great for preschoolers who can glue stick but not draw ); and by acting out silly little skits about getting germs on hands, hand washing, getting sick, and etc. It is important to encourage and help children to wash hands before eating, after playing outdoors or playing with pets, after using the bathroom, and after blowing their noses. Even though hands may appear to be clean, they may carry germs or microorganisms that are capable of causing disease. FYI ... : By properly washing hands, Children experience : Young children are visual and kinetic learners. This means they learn best by seeing and doing -- rather than just hearing. Young child should observe an adult or another child wash hands, while it is being discussed what to do. Then have the child do it, while the basic steps are explained again .
