Standard polyethylene-based plastic trash bags can take over 100 years to degrade and are NOT compostable. Less than 2% of ALL plastic bags ever get recycled. Studies indicate that approx. 100,000 marine birds die every year from ingesting or being caught up in plastic debris.
Some plastic manufacturers are blending addities to polyethylene to produce their "degradable" bags. This process is more of a marketing ploy than a reality.

"CHLORINE BLEACH" itself is actually a 5.25% solution of LIQUID SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE ('Swimming Pool Shock' is a 12.50% solution). Although NOT necessarily an effective cleaner, "CHLORINE BLEACH" IS a powerful 'oxidizer' and 'whitener'. As an oxidizing agent, "sanitizing" (killing of bacteria) and "whitening" occur through the reaction of the 'Free Oxygen' and other gases which are released as a by-product of this process. As chlorine bleach oxidizes, in the form of liquids (such as 'CLOROX'® and 'PUREX'®) -OR-powdered scouring powders (such as 'COMET'®and 'AJAX'®-when introduced into water), it produces chlorine gas (a lethal, poisonous substance) which definitively diminishes Indoor Air Quality. The gas, in concentrations of about 3 to 5 parts per million, irritates the mucous membranes, the respiratory system, and skin. Fifteen to 30 parts per million causes more severe irritation of eyes, coughing, and labored breathing. In higher concentrations, difficulty in breathing may increase to the point that death occurs from suffocation. NOTE: It is Poisonous and Extremely Hazardous IF SWALLOWED! Avoid inhaling 'Chlorine Bleach' fumes since it will irritate your respiratory tract. Avoid skin and eye contact. DO NOT mix with ammonia or an alkaline cleaner. Combining bleach and ammonia will create deadly, poisonous, toxic fumes. A safer 'OXIDIZING' agent is HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. Hydrogen Peroxide is a milder bleaching agent (versus chlorine bleach) on most surfaces, especially fabric. Solutions containing 3% to 6% are used as disinfectants and for bleaching hair. The chemical formulation of Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2. As the product oxidizes, the excess oxygen is released and the only residue left is H2O (water). Since 'Oxygen' is the by-product of its oxidizing process, it's use should have little, if any, impact on air quality. One drawback to Hydrogen Peroxide is its instability in sunlight. Once the mop is used and is wrung out in the bucket, the cleaner is contaminated and must be discarded after the cleaning function. The program remains affordable as long as "GREEN" and "BLUE" are used for mopping.
