CHAPTER I "A BEGINNING... to a "GREEN" STORY! "  |

"A BEGINNING TO "GREEN" CLEANING:" A TRUE CUSTODIAL STORY... SKIP to the Next Chapter (s): Chapter II: defining: "GREEN" Cleaning Chapter III: GO!GO!GO! "GREEN" ! "WHO WANTS TO BE CALLED A "JANITOR" HERE" ? THE OLE' CLEANINGPRO screamed out to an auditorium of 550 school custodians at a custodial workshop. Not a peep-noone stirred. "DOESN'T ANYONE WANT TO BE CALLED A "JANITOR"?, I repeated. Still, SILENCE... Perhaps, I should explain...At the last minute, a guest speaker cancelled due to health problems and I received an emergency call to stand in for him. But, what could I speak about that the professional custodian hadn't heard before or experienced first hand? * That he/she is an important part of any facility but the least appreciated? * That he/she is treated like a second-hand citizen in their own facility and whose position is trivialized and denigrated by fellow employees. * That he/she is frustrated due to lack of respect by fellow employees. * That he/she NEVER gets a pat on the back or a word of praise. * That the word "professional" is NEVER used with their job title. * That administration/management ALWAYS invests resources on training other employees but NEVER them. * That noone EVER cleans up after themselves and "the mess" is always left for them (because its their job). * That everyone assumes that a "Cleaning Fairy"enters the facility every night and waives her magic wand to make things "right" for the following morning. * That NOONE, except the custodial department, has any idea HOW MUCH freakin' hard work and toil it takes to get a building ready for the next day!............................AND, * That, we as professionals, must stick together, depend on one another, and praise each other since noone else will !! SHOULD I GO ON ? It has ALL been said before. How could I enthuse 550 custodians, if I couldn't even jump start my own engine regarding my speech? I required something "fresh" and "different" which would get the crowd's heart pumping. The week before, my son and I went to see the latest "STAR WARS : The Phantom Menace" movie together. The film's imagery was running through my mind and terms like " Master Jedi " when I accepted the speaking offer. At the time, I asked myself, " what would a custodian be titled 2000 years from now ? Of course, the answer, when I had one, would be the basis for my speech. Years ago, it dawned on me that most people do not even realize that "custodial care" is inherent in "the natural order" created by a higher power. Within this order, social insects, such as bees and ants, have specific workers, "drones", who maintain the hives and hills. It seems that "custodial care" is the only profession that is ordained by this higher power (NOT even lawyers or proctologists can make this claim). Even archeologists have found cave drawings of prehistoric tribe members who were left behind to take care of the women, children, and dwelling as younger members hunted for food. It actually seems that "CUSTODIAL CARE" is the second oldest profession known to mankind (we all know what # 1 is ! ). What is even more AMAZING is the derivation of the word---"JANITOR" !! You remember...."JANITOR". It is the one word that noone wanted to be associated with as a job title in sentence 1 of this article. It was the word that the 50's baby boomers used to describe the man/woman who did the cleaning in their elementary school. It only made sense since above the door to his/her storage room was a little sign which read: "JANITOR' S CLOSET" ! Did you know, that the word "janitor" comes from one of the most revered, sanctified, honored, ancient Roman gods-JANUS ? In fact, this god was so venerated, that the Julian calender exalted his name by placing it as its # 1 month: you guessed it...JANUARY . JANUS was the second most powerful god in ancient Roman Times who protected all of the gates and arches (beginnings and endings) and was caretaker of all of the Roman Temples. Only "Jupiter", the supreme god (Greek equivalent to "Zeus" ) was considered more powerful. Well, well, well...It seems that the job title, " JANITOR " is the only one of its kind- associated with a worshipped deity ( only the medical profession comes close with BUGS BUNNY: "What's up ' DOC' ?" ). However, over time and through the conscious attempt by OTHERS to make themselves feel better about THEMSELVES at our expense, does the term, " JANITOR " take on a negative, embarrassing connotation. As indicated, in today's world, noone even wishes to be associated with this noble, deified label although it carries with it the heritage and aura of the gods of ancient times. Everyone else has "beat" the pride attached to this occupation's title out of it so you can't even enjoy it anymore...and, we let them, changing "JANITOR" to "CUSTODIAN" so we could feel good about ourselves again ! In short, we have been stripped of our PROUD "roots" and identity ! This plain fact is indeed unfortunate. Which brings us to today's acceptable job title of your occupation: "CUSTODIAN", which, according to the dictionary means " a keeper or guardian ". Nothing more, nothing less. In the truest sense, we are all "custodians" to our children. And, if we wash and wax our car every Sunday, we are our car's "custodian" for that day. It's nothing exciting, nothing exceptional, or nothing worthy of any attention which is WHY most people react to us in the manner which they do. Whether using "Team Cleaning" -or- "Zone Cleaning" methods, today's custodians and cleaners are "task-oriented". As long as they achieve their tasks, the job is done. It doesn't appear that there is an over-all, higher purpose of their work-outside of getting the place "clean" for that particular day or night. The word, "custodian", implies NO nobility, NO deification, NO history- IT'S JUST THE "PRESENT" ! The word, " janitor", is a vestige from THE PAST whose meaning has been long lost and is associated with "embarrassment" ! Which brings us to THE FUTURE and my dilemma: " What would a custodian be titled 2000 years from now ?" Of course, the answer, within the context of the past and present, hit me like a bolt of lightening directly from the hands of Jupiter (Zeus) : The future title for a "JANITOR" and/or "CUSTODIAN" is "ENVIRONMENTAL GUARDIAN" ™ . His/her sole role would be to PROTECT INDOOR ENVIRONMENTS everywhere. He/she would be the environmental warrior against any intruders affecting "Indoor Air Quality" or any violators toward "Multiple Chemical Sensitivities". He/she would protect all environmental space between the "gates" and "arches" just like his ancient namesake, JANUS ! His/her ultimate purpose will be to GUARD THE INDOOR ENVIRONMENT at all costs for the sake of his/her fellow man, woman,or child. Fellow worker's health, safety, and perhaps even lives, will be in his/her hands based on his/her ability to maintain a high-level of air quality within a building; thwarting contaminants and pollutants from entering a building; preventing infectious materials from cross-contaminating surfaces; temperature control...just to name a few. Once again, his/her role will be raised above others since the other's survival within this futuristic indoor environment will depend on his/her ability to do his/her job. Of course, his/her supervisor, today's Director of Facilities-or-Executive Housekeeper, will be empowered with THE TITLE: "THE MASTER JEDI of ENVIRONMENTAL GUARDIANS " ™ . And,...as these thoughts materialized into words, I heard a buzz and "acceptable" laughter of these concepts from the 550 custodians in the audience listening to my ramblings. As I looked up, I saw faces grinning from ear-to-ear and I knew that I had connected with them. They, more than anyone, understood my message. As I finished my last word, the auditorium erupted into applause, cheers, and hoots. Some even stood up... and others, even today, refer to themselves as "ENVIRONMENTAL GUARDIANS" ™ !! An estimated 80% of indoor dust consists of "skin fluff". "Skin fluff" is the broken off skin particles that are constantly shed from the skin's surface. The average person loses about 10 pounds of dead skin each year. A microscopic, dust-related insect, known as the DUST MITE breeds and thrives in this type of dust. Although the indoor dust and mites themselves are allergic triggers, the real culprit creating "REAL" allergy problems for homeowners and occupants in commercial buildings are the bodily functions of the dust mite.
